Birth of a Family Media Release – Aug 21, 2017

VICTORIA – Indigenous Perspectives Society (IPS) is hosting the Victoria Premiere screening of Birth of a Family, as part of Aabiziingwashi (WideAwake): NFB Indigenous Cinema on Tour.

“We grew up in white homes, speaking only English and with no connection to our people or our culture. Though we were loved, we were outsiders in families that had grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins that were not ours.” Betty Ann Adam.

When is a family reunion not a reunion?  When your family has never met.

This special evening of thought provoking film launches a new fundraising campaign to help Indigenous Perspectives Society support delivering capacity building training underfunded communities and organizations.

“We have communities and organizations throughout BC and across Canada that cannot afford the training they need,” said IPS Associate Director Rachelle Dallaire. “We get a lot of requests from front line service providers and communities wanting to make positive changes, but they do not have the budget to support their learning needs. Our motto is creating excellence through training and leadership, and that is exactly what we hope to do with the funds generated from this campaign.”

Indigenous Perspectives Society (IPS) is a charitable and not-for-profit social enterprise that offers training programs and services that help foster a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives, cultural differences, and the need for self-determination. By creating excellence through training and leadership, we help strengthen lives and build successful relationships in our communities.

Beginning with a focus on Indigenous child and family service delivery through the     CARF International accredited Aboriginal Social Work training series, IPS has grown to include Cultural Perspectives Training, Adoption Online, Recruitment and Retention of Indigenous People, and more. By creating excellence though training and leadership, IPS has been supporting communities throughout British Columbia and across Canada for more than 22 years.
