Indigenous Perspectives Society proudly participated in National Indigenous Peoples Day, hosted on the traditional territory of the Songhees and Esquimalt peoples and organized by Royal Roads University. Our executive director was stationed at our vendor table, warmly engaging with visitors interested in our mission and offering candy, along with pamphlets on our popular Cultural Perspectives Training workshop.
Across the field, the traditional canoe events drew crowds. The protocol of welcoming canoes from afar was respectfully upheld, with many witnessing the powerful ceremony. We were privileged to hear the Lekwungen Dancers’ drumming and songs, watching their graceful movements from the shoreline as the canoes arrived. Throughout the day, the rhythmic sounds of drumming from the water accompanied the excitement of the canoe races.
Our own canoe, manned by staff, and friends from VanCity, was led by our Associate Director, Connie Martin. Connie’s drumming and singing guided our team to a strong second-place finish, adding a sense of pride to our participation.
Meanwhile, other IPS staff were busy supporting the day’s events. D’Arcy was hard at work in the kitchen, frying up everyone’s favorite—Bannock—working up a sweat as he crafted batch after batch. Alex spent the day assisting the Elders, enjoying their sharp wit, humor, and the richness of their stories.
On the main stage, dancers, drummers, and singers shared the vibrant cultures of our local Indigenous Peoples, filling the air with beauty and celebration. It was a day of connection, tradition, and honoring the land we walk on together.
