Indigenous Perspectives Society: Centre of Excellence in Community Education (IPS)

Purpose:

Holding Space for Healing: Understanding Crisis in Community was thoughtfully designed to provide guidance and teachings to Health Workers in the ways they respond to Indigenous people who are experiencing crisis and seeking their support. By understanding the impacts of colonization and loss on the health of Indigenous communities, participants will be guided through considerations and Indigenous frameworks aimed at supporting their work. Participants will learn tools for holding space and connecting with Indigenous people, centering cultural safety, humility, belonging in their responses and recognizing and promoting Indigenous resilience during engagements.

Learning Outcomes

  • Ensuring participants have an increased knowledge of the history of Indigenous peoples to directly understand how history impacts current realities
  • Define and describe trauma, including intergenerational impacts experienced by Indigenous peoples, families, and communities
  • Participants will develop an understanding of privileges and stereotypes in order to assess their own perspective, approaches, biases and assumptions
  • Grow deeper understanding of the importance of cultural belonging as it promotes resiliency and relates to a sense of safety, well-being and connection
  • Participants will develop tools to support implementation of their learning in real-world situations
  • Discuss burnout, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue within the context of crisis response work
