Coming In: Peer Allyship with Two Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQI* Youth

This new full day course has been developed for participants aged 14 to 25, whom are both allies and members of the 2SLGBTQI* community, to help deepen learning and strengthen connections. Coming In introduces participants to key concepts around the intergenerational effects of colonization and specific impacts to Two Spirit, Indigiqueer, and LGBTQ* folx. While inviting reflection on the realities of homophobia, transphobia, racism and bias, there is an emphasis on identifying and celebrating resilience, resurgence, and pride in identity. The course encourages self-reflection, meaningful discussions and offers relationship-building skills and strategies to support 2SLGBTQI* youth.

Coming In is a unique and exciting workshop that can be delivered in schools and workplaces. This training is also available, as a public offering, at our training location and virtually on Zoom.

Length: 6 hours

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe key terminology and concepts as identified by Two Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQ* people
  • Deepen appreciation of the traditions, resilience, and lived experiences of Two Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQ* people
  • Identify meaningful acts of 2SLGBTQ* allyship

Foot note:

‘Coming in’ is a counterpoint to the western queer concept of ‘coming out [of the closet], introduced by scholar Dr. Alex Wilson.

“In the narratives of two-spirit people, ‘coming in’ is not a declaration or an announcement. Rather, it is an affirmation of interdependent identity: [A Two Spirit person] comes to understand their relationship to and place and value in their own family, community, culture, history and present-day world.”

~Dr. Alex Wilson

2SLGBTQI* (Two Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Indigiqueer, * refers to all other beautiful beings in the extended family)
