Honouring Our Sacred Sisters

Learning about the history and the present-day responses to missing and murdered women is critical to understanding the context of gender-based discrimination that affects Indigenous women, girls and 2-Spirit Peoples in Canada. The goal of the training is to shed light on the impacts of colonialism and racism on the lives of Indigenous women, girls and 2-Spirit peoples as well as on their families, communities, and Nations. The alarming statistics of casualties related to this phenomenon mirrors the systemic racism towards Indigenous Peoples in this country.

From the history of residential schools, the sixties scoop, the Indian Act, the lack of police response to missing persons reports, flawed investigations into the deaths and the more recent discovery of children in unmarked graves on residential school sites, the message is clear. Each of these events reinforces and permeates the non-Indigenous ‘culture’ of this country with a clear message: “Indigenous Peoples matter less” and “Indigenous Peoples are expendable.” 

Understanding the context of these messages and their impacts on the lived realities of Indigenous families and communities is critical to providing trauma-informed care for the people we work for and with.
