Status: Full-Time Position (37.5 hours per week)

Remuneration: $55,000 – $62,500 based on experience

PAN is a network of 40+ community-based and allied organizations responding to HIV, hepatitis C and supporting harm reduction across B.C., and our agile and collaborative staff team is committed to realizing positive change and social justice. The Pacific AIDS Network (PAN) is seeking a full time Research Manager to join the Research and Evaluation Team. This is an exciting position that offers great variety in work, flexibility and room for creativity. This position has two primary responsibilities: A) supporting the Research Department at PAN, and B) closely supporting the Making it Work Community-Based Research Study.
The first part of the role is will be working with PAN’s Director of Evaluation and Research to take on leadership and operations roles in managing research projects happening at PAN and programs under CIHR Centre for REACH in HIV/AIDS, a national research centre.
The other half of this position will be in supporting the Making it Work Community Based Research Study directly. Making it Work is an Indigenous focused community-based research (CBR) study that is looking at why, when, how and for whom community services work for people living with HIV, hepatitis C, and/or challenges with mental health or substance use.
The Research Manager will also lead projects related to stigma reduction, harm reduction, community services, and social determinants of health relating to HIV, hepatitis C, and substance use. The Research Manager will provide supervision to other research team members, will be active in budget, work planning, and departmental development including supporting funding applications.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Working closely with the Director of Evaluation and Research to:
- Provide leadership across PAN’s research program.
- Provide leadership and supervision to the Making it Work Community-Based Research study at PAN, including support/actively working with our valued Indigenous partners, Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
- Supervise and support PAN staff within the Research Department including Research Coordinators, Peer Research Associates, Research Trainees and independent contractors.
- Manage research program and project budgets, contracts and work plans.
- Lead the development and implementation of research plans, ethics applications, research tools, data collection, analysis and sharing of findings for PAN’s research projects in partnership with other PAN research staff.
- Support the development of research projects, data collection and analysis for studies under CIHR Centre for REACH in partnership with REACH leadership, staff and partners working across regions in Canada.
- Ensures the smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of research and data collection activities.
- Provide research support and capacity-building internally at PAN, and in partnership with PAN’s members and allies within BC and across the REACH research centre; this includes (but is not limited to) developing trainings or capacity-building tools, assisting with the creation of research plans and data collection tools, and supporting data analysis and knowledge translation/mobilization.
- Develop accessible data reports, presentations and other knowledge mobilization tools, using data visualization tools and best practices.
- Review and edit reports and other correspondence for the PAN Board of Directors, PHSA, other funders, membership and other key stakeholders as required.
- Contribute to program development, business planning, and funding applications to ensure sustainability for the Research Department at PAN.
- Model and promote community-based and participatory approaches to research and the embodiment of GIPA/MEPA, Nothing About Us, Without Us principles.
- Lead, alongside other PAN staff a commitment to the calls for action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission including cultural safety and humility principles in research.
- Promote a culture of learning within PAN, REACH and beyond (including but not limited to members, partners and stakeholders PAN works with).
- Maintain confidential records and files.
- Regularly report to and communicate with the Director of Evaluation and Research.
Other duties and special projects identified that reflect organizational need as well as employee interest.
- Master’s level education (or equivalent experience) in a related field.
- Minimum three to five years of experience leading and managing research projects in public health, community-based health sectors, or other health and social determinants of health sectors.
- One to two years of experience in managing teams and personnel, budgets and work plans.
Excellent organizational and time management skills – this is key as the number of projects the Research Manager handles is high.
- In-depth knowledge of community-based research and/or participatory evaluation principles.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills (including but not limited to report writing).
- Excellent interpersonal, coordination and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Basic quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
- Experience in or understanding of social justice and health equity and how they are experienced by different communities in BC.
- Proficiency in applicable software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office, Excel, data analysis software, data visualization software, etc.).
