Under the guidance of the Health Director, the Community Health Nurse will play a pivotal role in assessing and coordinating client care within our culturally enriched community health programs. Welcome to the Gitsegukla First Nation, a vibrant and proud community comprising five hundred individuals. Nestled at the confluence of the Kitseguecla and Skeena Rivers, just 40 km southwest of Hazelton, British Columbia, our name Gitsegukla symbolizes “people living under the precipice” in the Gitxsan language, representing the striking mountain that overlooks our land.  Located in the captivating Skeena Valley, our community offers a serene and picturesque environment that has sustained our ancestors for countless generations. What you will do

Program and Service Delivery Management:

·        Harmonize our community’s health service needs with appropriate care services.

·        Blend care services in a way that respects our community’s needs while nurturing independence, family ties, and our communal support system.

·        Craft individualized client-centered care plans rooted in our cultural values.

·        Foster connections by referring community members to culturally aligned agencies and physicians.

·        Weave health wisdom through interactive information-sharing sessions and informal teaching, enriching our community’s understanding.

·        Share your professional wisdom to ensure that our programs dance in harmony with our cultural traditions.

·        Nurture mental health and wellness, acknowledging the interconnectedness of our mind, body, and spirit.

·        Collaborate with the Health Director to honor our traditions while assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating our community health programs.


Stakeholder Relations and Management:

·        Weave a tapestry of relationships with healthcare kindred spirits and community resources.

·        Cultivate partnerships that honor our indigenous wisdom and amplify our healthcare traditions.

·        Infuse every interaction with professionalism, fairness, and a service ethos, respecting the circle of life.


Other Responsibilities:

·        Care Services: Identifying needs and providing health services. Coordinating care services in such a way to meet the needs of the community members while encouraging independence, family and community support. Developing client centered care plans. Referring community members to appropriate agencies and/or physicians. Promoting mental health and wellness.

·        Program Support: Supporting the Health Manager in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the community health programming. Maintaining professional support and consultation to ensure the programs are delivered in a safe effective manner.

·        Administration: Maintaining client confidentiality and ensuring that all records are stored securely. Ensuring that community members taking part in the health programs have access to the necessary medical supplies and equipment.

·        Relationship Building: Cultivating internal and external linkages and partnerships with other healthcare professionals and collaborating with community resources.

·        Education: Maintaining nursing skills through attendance at workshops, conferences, in-service and staff meeting, in addition to reading current literature and evidence-based principles. Providing clients and family caregivers with health information as required through demonstrations and informal teaching sessions. Accessing First Nation’s Health Authority funded professional development/education opportunities.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·        Understanding of the history, health, and social issues in First Nation communities, combined with cultural awareness.

·        Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, collaborating effectively in various situations.

·        Ability to facilitate learning, teach, and support the adoption of health programs.

·        Self-directed with excellent organizational skills.

Experience and Education:

·        Current member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC).

·        Bachelor of Nursing degree from a Canadian University or equivalent, or a combination of training and experience.

·        1+ year of experience in a similar role, particularly in rural/remote settings and with First Nation communities, is an asset.

·        Experience in palliative or elder care is advantageous.

·        Willingness to pursue additional certifications, education, and skills as required.

·        BCCDC Immunization Certification or a commitment to obtaining it.

Other Requirements:

·        Successful completion of criminal records review and periodic police record checks.
