Even though we currently don’t have Indigenous students on campus, we are wholeheartedly committed to introducing our international students and educators to the richness of Indigenous culture, knowledge, and ways of being. Columbia College is looking for an exceptional Indigenous Initiatives Consultant who will play a pivotal role in reshaping our educational environment and building connections with local First Nations and Urban Indigenous groups.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Columbia College is situated on the unceded, ancestral territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səlílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (TsleilWaututh) Nations. Established in 1936, Columbia College is a non-profit Society and a registered charity.
Since 1936, Columbia College has offered high-quality educational programs, including a University Transfer Program fully integrated into the BC Transfer System, an Associate Degree Program certified by the Ministry of Advanced Education, a University Preparatory Program, and a High School Program certified by the Ministry of Education. Thousands of Canadian and international students have progressed through Columbia College’s programs to Canadian universities or successful careers.
SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
This exciting new role will build upon existing efforts by committees and College teams to create a cohesive Indigenization program. The Indigenous Initiatives Consultant will collaborate with local First Nations and Urban Indigenous communities in the College’s Main Street neighborhood to explore opportunities for partnership and support.
The Indigenous Initiatives Consultant will research, strategize, and implement initiatives to promote pedagogical and curricular practices that advance classroom and campus climate, intersectionality, and Indigenous initiatives. They will offer consultation, process design, facilitation, programming, and resource development services to the teaching and learning community, with a focus on Indigenous engagement and educational initiatives.
This role will also provide resources and guidance to Indigenize events, services, clubs, recreation, and student relationships.
The Indigenous Initiatives Consultant will work closely with the College’s leadership team, Instructional Development Consultant, Deans and Department Heads, as well as a diverse range of staff and instructors eager to embrace Indigenization.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
· Collaborate with local First Nations and Urban Indigenous communities in the College’s Main Street neighborhood to establish partnerships.
· Provide faculty with resources and guidance to widely indigenize curriculum and pedagogy across all disciplines.
· Offer staff resources and guidance to Indigenize events, services, clubs, recreation, and student relationships.
· Develop and lead campus-wide events, Professional Development opportunities, and innovative programs that foster dialogue and knowledge-sharing between the College and the wider community.
· Review and guide the Indigenization of policy, charitable programs, strategic planning, and other significant initiatives.
· Assess the success of Indigenization efforts across the College through curriculum review, surveys, and other assessment tools.
· Collaborate with departments and divisions to assess and revise policies to facilitate Indigenous integration.
· Create innovative opportunities to promote Indigenous initiatives at Columbia College through knowledge-sharing initiatives.
· Lead the consultation and integration of Indigenous approaches, decolonization, and Indigenization strategies and resources into college culture, activities, and programs.
WHAT YOU BRING:
· A Master’s degree in a relevant field.
· Five years of project management experience in a post-secondary setting and/or Indigenous communities/organizations.
· Indigenous ancestry and/or in-depth knowledge of Coast Salish communities.
· Familiarity with DQAB and Ministry of Education standards, UNDRIP and DRIPA, the TRC’s Calls to Action, and post-secondary education systems.
· Experience in Indigenous pedagogies, curricular design, learning experience design, resource development, program development, facilitation, and evaluation in a higher education setting, especially in critical Indigenous studies and social justice.
· Experience in designing, developing, and facilitating processes and educational programs.
· Experience in facilitating group processes both face-to-face and online.
· Teaching experience, including online and multimedia technologies.
· Expertise in educational program planning and evaluation.
· Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure.
· Cross-cultural competency, particularly within urban Indigenous and First Nations communities.
· Familiarity with family governance structures and ceremonial protocols of Coast Salish communities.
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
· High degree of independence and teamwork skills.
· Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt writing style to various purposes and audiences.
WHAT WE OFFER
In addition to working with an inclusive, progressive group of people, we offer a competitive compensation package which includes:
· $77,000–$86,000 per annum, based on full time hours, qualifications, and relevant experience
· All Columbia College employees are covered by the Columbia College Employment Agreement, including a robust health and dental benefits package, a generous RRSP plan, and vacation.
